Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelagic state comprising more than 17,000 islands, 6,000 of which are inhabited. The country shares land borders with Papua New Guinea, East Timor and Malaysia. Other neighbouring countries include Singapore, Australia, the Philippines, and the Indian territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The capital, Jakarta, is in Java and is the nation’s largest city. Indonesia has a large population of over 234 million people and despite this has vast areas of wilderness that support the world’s second highest level of biodiversity. Two-thirds of the total land area consists of woodland, mangrove swamp and forest.

Located on the nature reserve of Moyo Island in a secluded cove overlooking the crystal-clear
waters of the Flores Sea, Amanwana (‘peaceful forest’) offers 20 air-conditioned, hardwood floor
luxury tents in ocean-front and jungle settings.

Built on a solid-wall foundation, followed by a soaring, waterproof exterior and interior covering of canvas, each air-conditioned tent provides 58 square metres of living space with a white-on-white king–size bed, wheat-coloured divans, a writing desk, a large bathroom with twin vanities, Indonesian artwork and banks of windows.
Amanwana’s pristine waters and reefs, steps away from guest tents, are a treasure trove for
snorkellers and scuba divers and the resort has its own dive operation.

Amanwana also maintains a fleet of boats for cruising, deep-sea fishing and diving. Excursions to nearby coral coves and beaches for shell collecting, beachcombing, snorkelling and picnics feature among daily activities.

The Dining Room and Bar are located in an open-air pavilion with a soaring 15 metre bamboo
roof, Indonesian hardwood flooring and solid coconut support pillars. Fresh fruit facials and black
Borneo body scrubs are among Jungle Cove Massage treatments. Moyo Island is a haven for
nature enthusiasts with a number of walking trails radiating out from the camp.

Amanwana (peaceful forest) is a wilderness hideaway set in a sheltered cove on the western side of Moyo Island, offering an experience of the natural world at its most diverse.
Surrounded by tropical rainforest, the resort overlooks Amanwana Bay, a protected marine park, and the inviting waters of the Flores Sea.
Offering some of the best diving and snorkelling sites in Indonesia, the pristine reefs of the Flores Sea are suitable for both beginner and experienced divers. Diving and snorkelling, from the jetty and the camp’s vessels, is readily accessible, proffering a spectacular array of magical, iridescent and fascinating sea life: hawksbill and giant turtles, soft red coral, barrel sponges flaying green and yellow tips, all surrounded by a myriad of tropical fish.

Location

MOYO ISLAND is located 15km north-east of Sumbawa, at the western end of Indonesia’s secluded Nusa Tenggara Islands, which begin with Lombok and stretch some 1,300km to Timor.
Moyo’s 36,000 hectares are home to a variety of bird and animal life, from deer to wild boar, macaque monkeys, the wild ox or banteng, sea eagles and osprey. Heavily forested, the island has a wide variety of flora and fauna; native teak, tamarind, fig, coral and banyan trees are plentiful.
Open savannah on the higher plateau affords views to Sumbawa’s Mount Tambora and to Satonda Island, with its crater lake, off the north-east coast of Moyo. Amanwana Bay and the Flores Sea are host to a rich array of underwater biodiversity.

The dry season offers excellent visibility, up to 40 meters+, while the green season offers good visibility, up to 20m. The decrease in visibility is due to an increased amount of plankton in the water. With this large quantity of food in the water it is possible to see manta rays in the area and sometimes even whale sharks.

Fish life is also plentiful. Varieties likely to be observed are; hawks bill and green sea turtles, moray eels, puffer-fish, parrot fish, blue spotted rays, lion fish and barracuda. Schools of banner fish and surgeonfish swarm the area sometimes you can see tuna hunting and reef sharks cruising by. Occasionally dolphins and whales can be seen.

THE DIVE CENTRE offers a wide range of equipment and can organise an underwater programme for guests. A variety of superb dive spots are easily accessible from Amanwana.

SNORKELLING can be enjoyed off the Amanwana jetty or in the sea in front of the tents. A variety of fish and coral life can be found in Amanwana Bay. Night snorkelling is also a popular activity at Amanwana. The beach boys at Amanwana can provide guided tours of the local reefs.

With Amanwana’s own dive operation, both beginners and experienced divers can explore the Flores Sea. A dive instructor will guide beginners (minimum age 12 years old) through the basic theory and skills, then accompany them on a dive from the jetty along the Sea Wall.
