Jungle vines hang from mature trees, moss and lichen cling to carved statues and a waterfall cascades all the way to the villa hidden below.
A huge rust-red door swings open to reveal a lush and secluded oasis. Traditional thatch-roofed pavilions overlook the fast flowing Penet River and clusters of towering bamboo, while a 12-metre swimming pool with timber deck provides the perfect spot to soak up the forest ambiance.
With six stand-alone bedrooms, (three with plunge pools), Villa Maya Retreat is perfect for families, friends or groups looking to share their holiday experience but who also desire privacy and room to breathe. Designed with space in mind there are plenty of places to take in the views and absorb the solitude; from the curtained relaxation balés to the secret garden alcoves to the sunset lounge at the river’s edge.

The villa is located in a rural setting with everything you need is at your fingertips. A
full complement of staff, including an experienced chef, is on hand to prepare and serve delicious home-cooked Asian and Western meals. A car and driver is also on standby for those eager to explore the island or indulge in Seminyak’s trendy restaurants, bars and shops (a 45 minute drive).
A stay at Villa Maya Retreat is not complete without exploring the pretty neighbouring village of
Cepaka, located in the heart of Bali’s ‘rice bowl’. Here, guests are privy to local traditions that have been practiced for centuries. Whether it happens while you’re witnessing a temple ceremony, watching farmers tend their fields or simply playing with the village children in the street, it’s hard not to fall under the spell of the Island of the Gods, its magic leaving you refreshed and rejuvenated for your return home.

Location
Villa Maya Retreat is located in a jungle-clad river gorge close to the pretty village of Cepaka in Bali’s Tabanan Regency, also known as Bali’s ‘rice bowl’ due to its vast terraced rice fields. This quaint village borders the Penet River and is a stunning example of a traditional Balinese community that has been untouched by tourism and the rapid development to the south of the island. Venturing out on foot or bicycle, guests can enjoy a privileged insight into the agricultural, religious and daily life of the villagers.
Just 11 kilometres away from the villa is the famous sea temple of Tanah Lot and the Nirwana Bali Golf Course, designed by Greg Norman (voted the number one golf course in Asia).
The nearest beaches are about eight kilometres from the villa but the sea is more suited to
surfing than swimming due to strong currents.
It is about 45 mins drive to Seminyak and all its restaurants and shops.

Features
Villa Overview
A steep stone staircase bordered by lush foliage and a man-made waterfall carves its way down a terraced gorge to the villa’s main entrance: a large rust-red cantilevered door that opens onto a lotus pond traversed by stepping stones.
Beyond the fish-filled pond, and overlooking the pool and river, is the dining pavilion which also
houses an informal living area and stainless steel kitchen. Downstream from here rests the open sided TV lounge and three standalone bedroom suites, while upstream lies the riverside lounge terrace, relaxation balé and master suite. The two remaining bedrooms are located on a terrace higher in the gorge, accessed by stairs to the rear of the kitchen and master suite.

Bedrooms
All six luxurious bedrooms at Villa Maya Retreat are housed in separate pavilions with high vaulted ceilings, polished terrazzo floors, en suite bathrooms and individual patios to admire
the views. Each air-conditioned suite features a four-poster king-size bed with mosquito net,
additional ceiling fans and a small bar-fridge.

Master Suite Bedroom
The master or honeymoon suite offers total seclusion with its own private garden
featuring a 5-metre plunge pool with timber sundeck overlooking the river. A slatted
screen divides the ensuite bathroom from the garden enabling guests to soak up the
ambiance from the cream terrazzo bathtub or the rain shower made from black
volcanic stone.
The bedroom, with its traditional alang-alang roof, has a large walk-in dressing area
and a small TV lounge decorated with blue and white batik cushions. Large glass
doors open onto a sheltered patio with a comfortable daybed perfect for bird
watching or listening to relaxation CDs.

Guesthouse bedrooms
Riverside suites
Three thatch-roofed sleeping pavilions sit side-by-side along the riverbank offering
sublime jungle views. Each spacious suite features a lovely indoor seating area that
captures the natural light and is furnished with a rattan sofa and marble topped
coffee table. Glass bi-fold doors open onto an outdoor terrace.
The ensuite garden bathrooms have been cleverly designed so that a real stone cliff
face, dripping in vines and creepers, forms one of the walls to evoke the feeling of
bathing in a jungle cave. Each ensuite has twin vanities and a black lava-stone rain
shower, while the suite closest to the main living pavilion also has a terrazzo bath
and built-in seating area. This suite is also equipped with a TV and DVD player while
the other two suites have only stereos.

Upper terrace suites
Reached via a set of stairs leading up from behind the kitchen and master suite, the
upper terrace suites have great views of the river valley. Being higher up the gorge,
these two rooms receive more sun and each feature a timber deck with sun loungers
and a small plunge pool. Light and airy, these suites are a later addition to the estate
and are more modern in their design but still feature high-vaulted ceilings; this time
with sirap-wood tiled roofs.
Each room has a black rattan sofa with white cushions and a small table perfect for
afternoon tea. Both ensuite bathrooms have tubs and rain showers however one is
semi-open to the elements while the other is totally enclosed.

Living/Dining and the Kitchen
Indoor Living Pavilion
The open-sided dining pavilion with its alang-alang thatched roof, polished grey floors and
ceiling fans forms the communal hub of the villa. Positioned next to the swimming pool, this
room features a huge 4-metre-long solid wood dining table complemented by ten black rattan
chairs with beige and black striped cushions, and a large vase of bright tropical flowers. An
antique Javanese drinks cabinet sits to one side, along with a long wooden desk and
surround-sound stereo system. This pavilion also houses an informal living area, with two
comfortable rattan sofas decorated in the same striped fabric, an ottoman and a rustic coffee
table.
Adjacent to the dining area is the fully equipped kitchen with stainless steel work tops and
appliances. Wooden-framed windows retract to allow for natural ventilation and a service bar
with three bar stools is just the place to enjoy a cocktail while watching the chef cook.
Across from the pool another large open-sided pavilion with a two-tiered roof, fashioned in
the style of a traditional Balinese wantilan (village meeting hall), forms the TV lounge,
complete with 42-inch satellite TV and DVD player. Fan-cooled, this pavilion features a
polished concrete floor with three sofas positioned around a marble-topped coffee table and a
sideboard displaying some interesting Indonesian artefacts. A good collection of magazines
and DVDs will keep guests entertained for hours.

Oudoor Living Pavilion
Among the many highlights of Villa Maya Retreat are its lush tropical gardens, river setting
and jungle vibe. Designed to maximise the villa’s natural surroundings, outdoor living spaces
invite guests to unwind, relax and admire the native vegetation and fauna – in particular the
iridescent blue kingfishers and alu (water monitor lizards) that scale the river banks.
The 12-metre green-stone swimming pool sits strategically at the centre of the property
surrounded by a large wooden deck upon which six sun loungers are shaded by white
ceremonial umbrellas. To one end of the pool is an alfresco dining area, while to the other
end a traditional style balé adorned with batik cushions provides respite from the heat.
A lily pond with a tall bubbling water features leads to a furnished terrace overhanging the
river – an idyllic setting for pre-dinner drinks. Here, a comfortable U-shaped sitting area with
space enough for a small party surrounds a polished tree-stump coffee table ornamented
with a bonsai tree.
Next to the terrace rests a huge curtained balé which looks especially romantic when lit at
night, and is a great place to enjoy a massage and be soothed by the sounds of the river.

Dining Pavilion
Dining
The personal chef at Villa Maya Retreat is at your service to prepare daily breakfast, lunch and dinner.
The villa offers an extensive suggestion menu of delicious home-style meals featuring Asian and
international dishes to cater to all tastes, with an excellent selection of vegetarian and children’s
options. The kitchen is also more than happy to tailor meals to accommodate any special dietaryrequirements.
A stay is not complete without sampling pepes ikan (fish steamed in banana leaf), satay ayam
(chicken satay on bamboo skewers) or pisang goreng (fried banana) with ice cream.
Groceries and beverages are charged at cost price. Guests will be requested to provide grocery
money in advance and the staff will do the shopping and keep the receipts for reference. To makethe most of the kitchen and give staff time to shop, it is a good idea to plan meals the evening before.

How meals and Drinks work-The System
Food and beverage items are charged based on grocery cost system. Guests will need to
provide some money in advance and the staff will do the shopping for you and keep the
receipts for your reference.
Should you have a request for a dish not on the menu, or a special dietary requirement,
please feel free to ask the chef, who will strive to comply with all of your wishes.
While the villa has large food preparation areas, it is not a restaurant and cannot support
each individual guest ordering different foods for same dining periods. If you have a large
group it is advisable that the group dines on the same dish or that you order several
dishes to be shared. Please allow at least one day’s notice, and feel free to discuss any
requirements with the chef or villa manager.

Food and Beverage Charges
Food items and beverage are charged at cost price with receipts available whenever you like. Please ask your manager if you wish to check your daily expense

Spa Service
Guests at Villa Maya Retreat can enjoy a traditional massage in the privacy of one of the bedrooms or
in the poolside gazebo. Massage treatments are provided by professionally trained therapists,
and the villa manager is on hand to assist with appointments.

5.2 Dining
5.3 For Children
The family friendly advantages of a villa holiday are many, including access to your own private
facilities and the freedom to use them whenever you want. Knowing that the kids can run around
happily, independently and safely, without you having to worry about other guests, is a real plus –
and one that means parents are certain to have a more relaxed holiday too.
Villa Maya Retreat is a great villa for families with older children: those with toddlers will need to be vigilant, however, due to the villa’s riverside location, steep staircases, overhangs and numerous fish ponds and water features.
The team of friendly staff at Villa Maya Retreat will make children feel as welcome as adults, and having these willing helpers on hand gives guests plenty of flexibility and freedom to do their own exploring beyond the villa grounds (full-time babysitting incurs a small extra cost).
Although the equipped kitchen allows you to prepare meals for fussy eaters or babies with ease, staff will happily to do this for you – just talk through your requirements and meal schedules with the villa manager or chef and they will take care of the rest.
Pancakes by the pool for breakfast? Toasted sandwiches in the TV lounge for dinner? No problem. The chef can customise all meals to suit children’s taste buds.

Don’t worry about packing all that cumbersome kids’ equipment for your stay. Just let us know what you need, and anything we don’t have in-house (villa facilities include a baby cot, highchair and car seat) we can hire on your behalf .

Transport
A driver and car (seating up to six passengers) is available to villa guests for eight hours a day
(excluding petrol).
If additional or after-hours transport is required, don’t hesitate to ask the villa manager to call one of the island’s safe and reasonably priced metered taxis.

Distances
• Echo Beach 8 km
• Canggu 8 km
• Tanah Lot 11 km
• Tabanan 10 km
• Seminyak 16 km
• Kuta 20 km
• Ubud 24 km
• Denpasar/ Airport 24 km

Things to do
Villa Maya Retreat’s manager, will have a wealth of information about nearby places of interest and
will help arrange transport and make any bookings required. Do also ask the staff about the local
area. Many of them live nearby and will be able to give an interesting insight into some of the
fascinating aspects of Bali life.
In the meantime, here is a taste of the many and varied activities on offer within reach of the villa.
• Villa Maya Retreat is close to the famous temple at Tanah Lot (11 km), although in peak season
a few too many tourists may transform a sunset visit into more of a heaving photo opportunity
than a moving experience. Visiting early in the morning (8-9am) provides a better idea of the
power of the location and the chance to see it undisturbed apart from perhaps an offering
ceremony.
• A nice sunset alternative is to head down to Echo Beach (8km) where a number of cafes offer
good sunset views and cold beer. Note that the beach here is dark volcanic sand and the waters
are better suited to surfing, having a pronounced swell and rip, rather than children’s swimming.
Hotel Tugu, a very stylish and eclectic boutique hotel a few minutes further down the coast is
also a good sunset spot.
• Fashionistas, trendies and shop-a-holics should hot-foot it down to Seminyak, Bali’s most
cosmopolitan enclave. Here, you can indulge for hours in the glut of stylish, chic boutiques.
There is a wide choice of fine dining, mid range, and cheap ‘n cheerful restaurants in Seminyak
too: fine dining venues include Sarong, the famous Ku Dé Ta, Mama San, La Lucciola, Sardine
and Métis.
• Play a round at the unbelievably scenic Nirwana Bali Golf Course. Bordered by ocean and rice
fields and just down from Tanah Lot sea temple, no wonder this championship-standard course
(designed by golf legend, Greg Norman) is frequently voted number one in Asia.
• Drive westwards to explore the charming Tabanan Regency, revealing terraced rice fields of
emerald green, volcanic mountains and black-sand beaches dotted with fishing communities. Or
head north to explore the volcanic lakes near the mountain town of Bedugul, including Lake
Bratan with its photogenic and stunningly positioned Pura Ulun Danu – one of Bali’s most
important temples.
• Covering 3.8 hectares of tropical parkland in Kuta, Waterbom Bali has 16 water slides
(including The Climax with its 360 degree loop) to entertain the young and the young at heart. A
great family day out, but go early to beat the crowds.
• Bali Treetop Adventure Park is near the town of Bedugal in northern central Bali (next to
Lake Bratan). Five adventure circuits, with heights ranging from two to 20 metres, challenge all
level and ages on suspended bridges, spider nets, Tarzan jumps and 12 flying foxes.
• Explore the scenic rice-field landscape and rural villages; a great way to get under the skin of the
‘real’ Bali. Stop off at a local warung (café) to sample some basic Balinese fare or cool off with a
cold drink.
